Pilot Q: FSX--add fix point mid-flight?

Wed Dec 24, 2014 3:40 pm

Hi Pilots,

Here's the scenario: I've loaded my flight plan, I'm flying happily along,
and the controller asks me to fly direct to a waypoint not in my plan.

Trying not to get frantic, I search the waypoint in Plan-G. Let's assume
I find it. Success!

But now, I go to the flight planner in FSX. First of all, isn't this bad because
it pauses the flight -- a no-no on VATSIM?

But even assuming I can be so fast no controller notices ;-) how do
I find the point in the map? I'm scrolling around, zooming in, zooming out,
looking for points near by, all the while trying not to fly into something...

Is there a slick way to do this?

Thanks. I think you are correct about avoiding FSX FP. The re-direct happened to me
once because of traffic. It occurs to me a good solution is to ask the controller for
a heading to the space I'm needed to fly to, rather than mucking around with the GPS.

Good day.

I would highly recommend not using the FSX flight plan utility. Going direct to a waypoint not in your flightplan is not a common request and you might want to verify that the controller is aware that it is a deviation from your route. (It may just be a mistake). If it is not then going to it directly depends on which aircraft you are flying.
