VNY Tower

Mon Jan 03, 2011 4:43 pm

Hey y'all!

Just wanted to let you guys know that since I got my TWR cert, I'll be opening VNY and other smaller towers quite often! Come fly in/out!

See y'all there!

Too bad this is a decade old post.

I fly GA in socal and in all the time I've been listening to VATSIM I have never seen a class D airport open. I Found Burbank open once. I don't know what towered are covered, how can you tell? I was flying from KWHP to KHHR buyt like on seemingly every other day all I could hear was airliners

I was going to ask for Flight Following today but it got so active I couldn't get a word in, with as many as 5 people transmitting on occasion. There was also a KLM pilot that sounds like hes about 8

The 747 that took off and paused in the air right off the end of the runway was interesting too. Apparently it was someone also causing the frame rate problem where it was moving at half its indicated airspeed before it just stopped. I was tempted to fly by LAX to see that but there were enough problems.

I fly out of VNY IRL so it's near and dear to me.

Solomoriah, all towers are open if the overlying controller (SOCAL, Center) is open. VNY and BUR themselves don't see a ton of controllers because they don't see a ton of traffic. A coordinated effort by some of the tower controllers to open the Deltas, though, could result in some traffic. We also occasionally feature them in events.

I'd love a reason to hop up on TOA tower (near and dear to me).

I used to do it without a reason.....recorded my own atis and everything.
Use caution for foxes in and around the airfield.

Ooh I do that too. I also throw in the use caution for the crane off the departure end. We should just staff TOA and see what happens tbh. I'd be down.

Except I'd have pilots do left patterns for 29L....just to fly over a nice small part of the hill.
