[Su 4/12, 1900Z] Mount Katmai, Alaska

Thu Apr 09, 2009 10:37 am

See the biggest volcano of the 20th century! On June 6th, 1916, the Novarupta dome near Mounta Katmai, Alaska began a sixty hour eruption that ejected magma 30 to 60 times the volume of the Mount St. Helens eruption. Join me for a guided tour of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and Mount Katmai.

KIAS: 120 kt
Distance: 120 NM round trip
Airport: PAKN (King Salmon)
Departure date and time (be at PAKN 15 minutes early):
Su 4/12 1900 Z
Su 4/12 1200 PDT
Su 4/12 1200 MST
Su 4/12 1300 MDT
Su 4/12 1400 CDT
Su 4/12 1500 EDT
Communications: ZLA Teamspeak

Route: Find PAKN on skyvector. Departing King Salmon, follow the South shore of Naknek Lake East to Mt. Katolnat. Enter the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, at the South end of which (scenery permitting) we will find the Novarupta dome, five miles West of Mt. Katmai. From there, proceed to the caldera and lake at Mt. Katmai, which we will circle before reversing our path to return to King Salmon.

Excuse the huge pictures, but I couldn't resist! I took a brief jaunt over to Mt Katmai in the F4. This looks like a fun trip!

The question was asked in a PM whether Teamspeak is required to join a ZLA club flight. The answer is "no." If you've got no comms at all, you can still fly. Pick a plane and follow them. Use your head and your manners when deciding where in the sky to put your airplane. Use 122.80 for comms. I try to limit comms on that channel, because lots of chatter there can be annoying, so if we get chatty on that channel after the flight begins we'll switch to another frequency.

I know, like there'll be anyone nearby in that part of Alaska. But my luck, there'll be three grumpy supervisors with hangovers flying overhead the day we decide to chat it up on 122.80.
